Dr. Sheldon Winkler Receives the Prestigious 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Buffalo Alumni Association
Buffalo, NY - October 13, 2023 - The American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics (AAIP) is thrilled to announce that Dr. Sheldon Winkler, a renowned expert in the field of dental medicine, has been honored with the esteemed 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Buffalo Alumni Association. This prestigious accolade recognizes Dr. Winkler's remarkable career achievements, unwavering dedication to community and university service, and invaluable contributions to research and scholarly endeavors.
The University of Buffalo Awards Celebration, held on October 12, 2023, at the esteemed Buffalo Marriott Niagara, served as the perfect setting to bestow this distinguished award upon Dr. Winkler. This annual event brings together exceptional alumni, and Dr. Winkler's exceptional accomplishments made him a standout candidate for this prestigious recognition.
The University of Buffalo Alumni Association awarded Dr. Sheldon Winkler its 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award for the School of Dental Medicine in recognition of his exceptional career accomplishments, community and university service, and research and scholarly activity. The award was presented at the University of Buffalo Awards Celebration on October 12, 2023, at the Buffalo Marriott Niagara.
Dr. Winkler is Professor Emeritus at Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Prosthodontics and Dean of Research, Advanced Education, and Continuing Education. Dr. Winkler graduated from NYU College of Dentistry. He served in the US Army as dental clinic commander at Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, from 1956 to 1958. In October of 1961 during the Vietnam crisis, he was called back to active duty until his release the following year. He received his advanced certificate in prosthodontics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in May of 1971 while serving as an Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry.
Dr. Winkler is an educator, author, editor, researcher, and national and international speaker on prosthodontics, implant dentistry, dental materials, and geriatric dentistry. Among the many countries that Dr. Winkler has been invited to speak in are England, France, Germany, Greece, Jordan, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, South Korea, and Thailand. Dr. Winkler’s textbook, Essentials of Complete Denture Prosthodontics has been one of the world's most popular and widely used dental textbooks and is well established as a standard reference. In 1992, he founded the journal Implant Dentistry, which he edited for six years, and is currently Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Oral Implantology and editor of Implant Prosthodontics Monographs. He has been Executive Director of the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics since 1998. In 2018, Dr. Winkler was instrumental in organizing an implant dentistry museum in a historic building in Venice, Italy, in honor of two American dentists.
In 2006, Dr. Winkler and his daughter, son-in-law, and dogs moved to Arizona. An authority on music of the Second World War, Dr. Winkler has contributed articles to World War II History magazine and authored The Music of World War II: War Songs and Their Stories, which Merriam Press publishes and now in its third edition. Dr. Winkler enjoys collecting artifacts from the Second World War and playing songs from the 1940s on his baby grand piano in his home overlooking the beautiful Valley of the Sun. He continues to lecture on the music of the Second World War at civic, educational, music, religious, social, and veterans’ organizations, book clubs, colleges, libraries, and museums.

Dr. Sheldon Winkler, Executive Director of the AAIP, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Dentists Foundation on December 2, 2023, for his many years of contribution to the advancement of the dental profession and its public appreciation. Dr. David Hancock of the American College of Dentists presented the award to Dr. Winkler at his home in Carefree, Arizona.
